Workshop: Turkish Kilim Weaving
Join us for a hands-on introduction to kilim weaving, one of the most enduring traditions in Turkish textile arts. Often associated with the Pazyryk period, flat-weave traditions, such as kilim weaving, are believed to date back approximately 2,500 years, with roots in nomadic cultures across Central Asia and Anatolia.
In this beginner-friendly workshop, you will learn a little about the history and cultural meaning of kilims, and then explore the basics of the weaving process, specifically how warp and weft work together in a flat-weave (weft-faced) structure. Each participant will weave on an individual loom using wool and cotton yarns in a variety of colors, and you will leave with your own mini kilim sample to take home.
No prior experience is needed. All materials will be provided.
