About the Display
Animals are integral to human culture, and many textiles invoke their power and prestige. This global selection of artworks from The Textile Museum Collection includes textiles decorated with animal imagery, as well as saddle covers and trappings designed to adorn camels, elephants and horses. Highlights include a child's pair of tiger-shaped shoes from China, believed to ward off malevolent forces; an ancient Wari tunic whose intricate figures blend human and animal features; and four exquisite horse and saddle covers from the Brick-Freedman Equestrian Collection that show the importance of horses in four Asian cultures, from Tibet to the Caucasus.
