Celebrate culture and craft with a special family day dedicated to art you can wear!

People across time and cultures have expressed themselves through clothing and other adornments. This day of family-friendly art activities is inspired by beautiful kimonos, capes, robes and tunics on view in the museum's centennial exhibition Intrinsic Beauty: Celebrating the Art of Textiles. To celebrate the National Cherry Blossom Festival, we will have a special focus on Japan with demonstrations of traditional dance and music, as well as “kirigami” crafts.

This event is part of the National Cherry Blossom Festival.

Featured Activities:

  • Enjoy dance performances by Okinawa Kai

  • Design your own cape inspired by artworks on display

  • Make a cherry blossom accessory using “kirigami” techniques

  • Braid a friendship bracelet

  • Try on traditional Japanese garments like “happi” and “yukata”

  • Tour the Intrinsic Beauty exhibition

This program is part of The Textile Museum’s centennial celebrations in 2025 and is made possible through support from The Textile Museum Education Fund.

About the Exhibition

In 1925, George Hewitt Myers founded The Textile Museum with his global collection of carpets and textiles prized for their “intrinsic beauty of design, color and technique.” Intrinsic Beauty: Celebrating the Art of Textiles brings together iconic masterworks from The Textile Museum Collection. As the museum launches its centennial year, this exhibition celebrates textile making as one of the world’s oldest and most sophisticated art forms. Learn more about the exhibition
