D.C. Mondays: Lafayette's Tour of Washington

In 1824 a beloved hero of the American Revolution returned to America for the first time in 40 years. From August 1824 to September 1825, the Marquis de Lafayette traveled throughout the United States, welcomed by thousands of admirers at every stop. Although the tour brought him to each state in the Union, he spent significant time in the National Capital Region, including Alexandria. Public historian Elizabeth Reese will discuss her book Marquis de Lafayette Returns: A Tour of America’s National Capital Region (Arcadia Publishing, 2024), tracing Lafayette's route and highlighting the locations and people the famous general held closest to his heart. 

About Elizabeth Reese

Elizabeth Reese is a public historian in the Washington, D.C., area. She has spent over a decade as an interpreter at federal historic sites, including Hamilton Grange National Memorial and the United States Capitol. Reese is currently the associate manager of marketing at Woodlawn & Pope-Leighey House and the chair of the American Friends of Lafayette Bicentennial Committee for Washington, D.C. She is also working towards the completion of her master’s degree in American history from Gettysburg College, researching public memory, family ties and grief in the Early American Republic.
