Uncover the extraordinary ways that W. W. Corcoran shaped D.C.’s emerging elite, changing the capital and country — for better and worse. Mark L. Goldstein will provide a colorful account of this political chameleon who successfully transcended political party, geography and ideology to become one of the richest, most influential Americans. Goldstein’s new book, Before the Gilded Age: W. W. Corcoran and the Rise of American Capital and Culture (Georgetown University Press, 2023), also details the development of banking, investing, lobbying, art collecting and philanthropy in the United States.

About Mark L. Goldstein

Mark L. Goldstein has held senior positions at the U.S. Senate Committee on Governmental Affairs and the U.S. Government Accountability Office. He holds a master’s degree in public administration from the George Washington University and a Ph.D. in U.S. history from the University of Maryland, College Park.
