Contemporary Voices: Gerhardt Knodel

 Join artist Gerhardt Knodel online for a discussion of his body of work and his discovery of significant resources in historical textiles that inspire investigation and innovation.  

Knodel's work collides past and present, extending the legacy of the original textile into a contemporary context. His recent exhibition and publication Imagined Futures traces his evolving exploration of the fabric medium. 

This program is part of The Textile Museum’s centennial celebrations in 2025. 

About the Artist 
Throughout his long career as an artist and mentor at Cranbrook Academy of Art, Gerhardt Knodel (American, b. 1940) has collaborated with many of the country's most outstanding artists and designers. As a trustee of The Textile Museum, he advocates for innovative projects that extend the museum's legacy in a changing world. Knodel’s work has gained international recognition and has been supported by prestigious organizations, including the National Endowment for the Arts, the Smithsonian American Art Museum and the James Renwick Alliance. He has also received the esteemed Gold Medal awarded by the American Craft Council.
