Lecture: Portraying the Miao in Imperial China

Liana Chen, GW assistant professor of Chinese language and literature, will introduce some of the features that are considered integral to the ethnic identity of the Miao people—China’s fifth largest ethnic minority group. Chen will examine historical documents that contribute to the discourses of the Miao’s origins; its relationships to other peoples in China; its social structure, language, religious practices, festive activities; and most importantly, the social significance of Miao costuming and traditional textile arts.
