Lecture: Josephine Powell’s Life and Legacy

Kimberly Hart, associate professor, Buffalo State College, SUNY

5:30 PM: Reception
6 PM: Lecture

Kimberly Hart, the late Josephine Powell’s student, will discuss her mentor’s extraordinary life, exploring her work as a photographer, textile collector, and collaborator with Harald Bohmer. Bohmer and Powell worked together on the DOBAG cooperative, a project aimed at reviving the traditional Turkish art and craft of carpet weaving. Hart will share how Powell supported her study of the cooperative for her dissertation—and how she returned the favor by publishing on Powell’s textile collection and photo archive after her death.
