Lecture/Show-and-Tell: The Evolution of Carpet Designs

Wendel Swan, collector and museum trustee

Using photographic images and animation, collector and museum trustee Wendel Swan will illustrate how traditional carpet designs and elements evolve. Design adaptions discussed will include: from complex to simple, naturalistic to abstract, curvilinear to rectilinear, and the adaption of urban motifs by tribal and village weavers. The presentation will challenge some popular beliefs about textile design.
