The Washingtoniana Collection includes over 600 books, pamphlets, planning studies, government reports, proposals, and documentation of both built and un-built Washington. Highlights include President George Washington's letter to Congress describing the ten-mile square that would become the District of Columbia and an 1814 manuscript map by an English army officer illustrating the Battle of Bladensburg, the American defeat in the War of 1812 that resulted in the burning of the White House and other buildings.
