Cultural Threads: Exploring the Context of Oriental Rugs and Textiles

This weekend conference delved into the cultural context of Oriental rugs and textiles—an engaging exploration for experts and novices alike in support of the exhibition Timuktu to Tibet: Rugs and Textiles of the Hajji Babas. Speakers included: Wendel Swan, collector, ICOC Executive Committee, The Textile Museum Board of Trustees; Thomas D. Cook, Joan and Serepta Harrison Chair in Ethics and Justice, professor, Northwestern University; Kate Fitz Gibbon, consultant and writer on collections management and cultural heritage issues; Peter Harris, tapestry weaver and independent scholar; Mattiebelle Gittinger, research associate, Southeast Asian textiles; and Jon Thompson, former May Beattie Fellow in Carpet Studies, Ashmolean Museum of Art and Archaeology, University of Oxford; Recipient designee of The Textile Museum’s 2008 George Hewitt Myers Award.
