Demonstration: Bundle Dyeing

An-Phuong Ly, textile artist

Join textile artist An-Phuong Ly as she discusses various plants and flowers used as natural dyes and explores the ways that color can be extracted. Ly transfers color and form to cloth using a method called eco-printing, in which plant matter is placed on top of fiber, bound, and then steamed. Participants will learn different ways to treat fiber in order for color to stay fixed in the fabric, as well as different types of materials recommended for natural dyeing.

This program relates to the exhibition Binding the Clouds: The Art of Central Asian Ikat and is part of the museum's weekly Textiles at Twelve series, which explores textile arts and global cultures through films, lectures, gallery talks, and more. Free, no reservations required.
