If you’ve spent time in Washington, D.C., you’re probably familiar with Street Sense Media—the non-profit that employs homeless men and women to distribute its by-donation newspapers. Street Sense works to end homelessness in the area by empowering people beyond its newspaper program. Since 2013, GW professor Leslie Jacobson has directed the weekly “Staging Hope” theater workshop. In this special performance,  members of the Street Sense workshop will perform excerpts from Timone of DC, a play they have developed with Jacobson and her colleague Roy Barber. This play, a deconstruction of Shakespeare's Timon of Athens, explores the impulses behind giving, and questions how we can truly help another human being. This is a unique opportunity to hear about this program, how the play was created, and to engage with D.C.'s homeless community in a new way. This program is part of the museum's weekly Textiles at Twelve series, which explores the textile arts and global cultures through films, lectures, gallery talks, and more.
